Artisan partners across the state work year-round to create the beautiful objects and art that you can find at various times during the year – often in local shops or galleries. Now that the weather is getting nicer – get outside and experience art too! There are so many events taking place throughout the next few months and into the fall where you can find our partners such as arts festivals, community celebrations, fairs, and more!
Artisans spend a lot of time on the road and in their booths or stands presenting the artwork they have for sale. Although this sales routine is a reality for the artisan that wants to get wider exposure and sell more artwork, it can be grueling and long days are spent outside – often in hot, sticky weather.
Please support PA state artisans and enjoy the culture and heritage that make the state so memorable! Keep an eye on the PA Artisan Trails blog and Facebook – as well as your local paper and artisan websites for more information.

Visit the beautiful campus at the Penn College of Technology in Williamsport and experience the Gallery at Penn College’s new exhibit in May! Artisan Cathy Breslaw’s work explores the possibilities of familiar and accessible commercial materials to create art pieces that awaken the mind and spirit. Journeys to Taiwan and Shanghai introduced Breslaw to factories where industrial mesh was manufactured for consumer grocery and kitchen products. Taking the material out of the world of commerce and into her studio, Breslaw revealed its organic and ethereal traits as she created works that combine forms of painting, sculpture, and installation.
Date: May 18 – June 28, 2012
Reception: Tuesday, May 22, 2012, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.
The college is conveniently located in Williamsport, PA. Parking and admission are free. The Gallery at Penn College is located on the third floor of the Madigan Library on campus. More information available at the gallery website: http://www.pct.edu/gallery/

HACC’s Rose Lehrman Arts Center recognized for arts in the capital region
HARRISBURG –The Live at Rose Lehrman performing artist series and the Rose Lehrman Arts Center of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, will be recognized by Theatre Harrisburg with the 2012 Award for Distinguished Service to the Arts in the Capital Region.
The gala awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, April 29, beginning at 5 p.m.
The Arts Awards are presented annually at the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts in Harrisburg in recognition of one outstanding individual and one organization for distinguished service to the arts. Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra Maestro Stuart Malina is the individual recipient. “HACC’s Live at Rose Lehrman series just completed one of its highest seasons in attendance, with 93 percent capacity and eight sell-out performances out of a 10-event season,” said Teri Guerrisi, director of the Live at Rose Lehrman series. “After finishing this incredible 2011-12 season, we are elated to accept the 2012 Arts Award. And, it’s a very fitting tribute to the Lehrman family legacy that Lois Lehrman Grass will serve as honorary chair of the Arts Awards Host Committee.”
HACC’s Rose Lehrman Arts Center is also home to the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery, which exhibits collections, the works of local artists as well as artists of national and international renown. The gallery also hosts visiting artists for workshops and lectures that are free and open to the public. Currently the gallery features juried selections of student work in the Student Honors Exhibit through May 4. There are nearly 400 art majors in HACC’s art department with a large number of non-majors. Students are enrolled in courses in traditional media such as painting, drawing, photography and ceramics. More unusual course offerings are glass blowing, jewelry and typography.
Students have also achieved honors in HACC’s nationally ranked photography program. This week HACC graduate and member of The Patriot-News photography staff Sean Simmers was part of the news team that won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for local reporting for its coverage of the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse case. He also was a recent nominee for a Pulitzer Prize in photography and has won other national honors.

Out of This World: The Landscapes of Our Solar System

March 13 – April 19, 2012
This visually dazzling exhibition chronicles the relationship between space science and space art, and brings together the real and the imagined landscapes of our solar system. The exhibit includes highly detailed photographs taken by interplanetary robotic explorers as well as dramatic views from the surfaces of planets and their moons as imagined by some of the best internationally known space artists of our day. New HACC gallery to open at Midtown location just in time for the March 2012 ‘3rd in the Burg’ (March 16, 2012)!!
HARRISBURG – HACC is adding to the cultural, social and educational environment of midtown Harrisburg with the opening of Fenêtre Gallery at Midtown 2 on the corner of Third and Reily streets. The gallery will offer exhibits of contemporary art work of emerging and established artists.
The first exhibit opens Friday, March 16 with “Visions and Voices: The 2012 South Central Pennsylvania Scholastic Art and Writing Awards,” sponsored by Commonwealth Connections Academy, an online public school. A reception will be held opening day from 6-8 p.m. It coincides with “3rd in the Burg,” when galleries host special exhibitions and events throughout the city the third Friday of each month.
Students in seventh through 12th-grade were recognized for their creative excellence in 28 different categories ranging from poetry to journalism and painting to comic art. They represent schools in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Juniata, Lebanon, Perry and York counties, showcasing their talents and having their entries judged by area artistic and literary professionals.
This exhibit contains paintings, drawings, photography and three dimensional works from students who had their works judged by area art groups like The Art Institute of York, Susquehanna Art Museum, and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
The gallery name is French for “window.” The name was selected for the interior window that is part of the original architecture that remains in the gallery space. The window creates an opening between the exhibit space and the reception area where light enters the building through a skylight. Metaphorically, the name is a reference to a window as an opening into the imagination.
Fenêtre Gallery is in a historic landmark in midtown. Constructed early in 1917, Midtown 2 was the home of Evangelical Press, a printing company, for decades before being turned into a state office and laboratory building in the 1970s. Today the building has been completely restored and upgraded to meet the varied needs of nearly 2,500 students enrolled in HACC’s trade and technology programs.
Hours for the gallery will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday and 6-8 p.m. Friday and by appointment. Events are free and open to the public. Entrance to the building is at 1500 Third St. The gallery is on the second floor.
For more information contact Kim Banister, gallery coordinator, by email, kebanist@hacc.edu, or telephone, 717-780-2435.

We are battered by the winds of financial stress and economic struggles on a daily basis and once again the arts are fighting to maintain the funding that was included in Pennsylvania’s state budget last year. Although Governor Corbett has stated that he will recommend maintaining the same amount of funding, there are significant risks from several angles, including difficult cost-cutting decisions in areas like education and human services, that lawmakers have to grapple with this budget cycle. What can we do?
Citizens for the Arts shared the following information last week and again today – please consider taking the time to show your support right now!
[Lawmakers] will be working with a Corbett recommendation of $8.179 million for the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts (PCA) grants to arts organizations as well as $886,000 for the PCA’s administrative line item. This represents level funding for FY 2012-12. With these recommendations, Governor Corbett continues to demonstrate his commitment to the arts. Last year, the Governor presented similar budget recommendations for the PCA but those recommendations were cut by 70% by the House of Representatives. We, at Citizens for the Arts in Pennsylvania, need your help to ensure this does not happen again. If you haven’t done so already, we are asking you to:
- Write a letter to Governor Corbett to thank him for his continued support of the arts
- Write letters to your legislators in support of Governor Corbett’s recommendations for the PCA.
We have a window, now, of 5-7 days to make these contacts. The fastest way to make contact is by sending an e-mail to your legislators and the Governor. Citizens for the Arts in PA has created a template for your use on our Legislative Action Center. We ask that you personalize the e-mail to reflect what is happening in your community or with your organization. We’re also asking you to forward our action alert to your board members, patrons, friends and family asking them to also contact their legislators in support of Gov. Corbett’s recommendations for the PCA. We need to act on this fast. Please send those e-mails today!
If you have questions, please contact Jenny Hershour at jlh@citizensfortheartsinpa.org or by phone at 717-234-0959.
If you cherish the arts, if you are an artist, if you want to see the arts in our schools and our communities – act now!

The New Leaf
Each New Year comes to all of us with latent potential and fresh starts – the same is true for the Rt15 ByWay of the Arts artisan trail! Partners on the artisan trail are joining through a juried membership process starting this year and each partner is represented in a variety of ways including general marketing through advertisements, as well as promotional materials, Facebook, website (www.rt15arts.com), and events/exhibits. Partner membership provides the artisans and partner locations with additional exposure on a regional, state and national level that they might not have had otherwise! It also provides artisans with resources, information and initiatives to improve arts in the local communities along Rt15 between Gettysburg and Williamsport.
As a visitor to the PA Artisan Trails and more specifically, Rt15 ByWay of the Arts, you can have terrific experiences exploring along the Rt15 corridor and meeting with local artisans and partner locations. Several of our artisans work from home studios and exhibit in our partner locations or online including Jody Sheffer, Jim Turban, Jane and Larry Shull, and Donna Damgaard – be sure to visit their websites for more information and images of their work. Follow us on Facebook for regular updates, and visit the website to see all of our partners (www.rt15arts.com) with new information and images. When you’re ready to get on the road, try one (or more!) of these adventures for a day….

These people are enmeshed in the culture of their regions, often working full time for a related cultural/tourism group or agency.
This month, the focus is on PA Artisan Trail leader Kristin Poerschke!
Kristin has worked for the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor in Ligonier, Pennsylvania for the last nine years as the organization’s bookkeeper/Office Manager. She grew up in Chicago, graduated from Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, PA and then married and lived in West Virginia for 19 years before relocating to Ligonier 11 years ago.
The Lincoln Highway (PA Route 30) is a unique cultural heritage trail along the Route 30 roadway. There are lots of historically significant events and details surrounding this important roadway and it is also one of the routes that the PA Artisan Trail follows through the southwestern part of Pennsylvania. Kristin has been involved with the artisan trail program, known as Handmade Along the Highway, along PA 30W and PA Route 40 (the National Road) for the past six years, but has only acted as the coordinator of the artisan trails for the past 2 or so years. Although she claims that she has no formal arts background, she is very keen on supporting American artisans and appreciates the time and talent that goes into creating artwork. Kristin has encouraged individual creativity in many of her previous work experiences including her work as a teacher, an activities director at a nursing home, and a Girl Scout day camp director. One of her favorite arts-related memories is a Girl Scout Summer Day camp program where Kristin arranged to have a potter come and work with the girls. The artisan simply brought pounds and pounds of clay and encouraged the girls to create. They spent a couple of mornings that week getting messy and having a ball!
Kristin is well respected and appreciated by the PA Artisan Trails Alliance and her artisan trail partners for her supportive approach to the arts and her genuine, caring nature. If you’re in the Ligonier area, make sure to stop in to say hello! and explore at the new LHHC location at 3435 Route 30 East, Latrobe, PA 15650 – they’re still on the Lincoln Highway!
