The New Leaf
Each New Year comes to all of us with latent potential and fresh starts – the same is true for the Rt15 ByWay of the Arts artisan trail! Partners on the artisan trail are joining through a juried membership process starting this year and each partner is represented in a variety of ways including general marketing through advertisements, as well as promotional materials, Facebook, website (www.rt15arts.com), and events/exhibits. Partner membership provides the artisans and partner locations with additional exposure on a regional, state and national level that they might not have had otherwise! It also provides artisans with resources, information and initiatives to improve arts in the local communities along Rt15 between Gettysburg and Williamsport.
As a visitor to the PA Artisan Trails and more specifically, Rt15 ByWay of the Arts, you can have terrific experiences exploring along the Rt15 corridor and meeting with local artisans and partner locations. Several of our artisans work from home studios and exhibit in our partner locations or online including Jody Sheffer, Jim Turban, Jane and Larry Shull, and Donna Damgaard – be sure to visit their websites for more information and images of their work. Follow us on Facebook for regular updates, and visit the website to see all of our partners (www.rt15arts.com) with new information and images. When you’re ready to get on the road, try one (or more!) of these adventures for a day….
Carlisle area: Take a walk among quaint shops in downtown Carlisle and make sure to stop in at Colucci & Co (www.colucci-company.com) at 117 North Hanover Street where you’ll find handcrafted jewelry and creative wares from over 30 American artisans. Right around the corner is the History on High shop (33 West High Street), a unique combination of Cumberland Valley visitors’ information and crafts inspired by the history and culture of the area.
Boiling Springs: Just a short drive down the road in Boiling Springs you’ll find the Village Artisan Gallery and folk artisan Gay Foltz . The gallery holds regular “Artists in Action” sessions on Saturdays so you can meet artisans and watch as they create pieces of art. More information at www.villageartisangallery.com/current_events.
Harrisburg area: Take in the beautiful Susquehanna River, then head into Harrisburg and explore the exhibits and arts classes at the Art Association of Harrisburg (www.artassocofhbg.org) and the HACC Rose Lehrman Gallery. One of the initiatives on Rt15 this year is to welcome in the college galleries along the trail to create exposure for a larger audience including students! Don’t forget to stop out to 4812 Jonestown Road and visit Richelle Leigh Walk at her shop and see the beautiful jewelry she is creating (www.rlcollection.com)
Newport area: Just north of Harrisburg, you can tour the scenic Juniata River valley and quaint Newport to find the PCCA Gallery hosting regular exhibits and a unique gifts gallery shop. Just a few blocks away you can explore Landis House for additional local history and exhibits! Find both at www.perrycountyarts.org for updated info. On your way back to the Susquehanna, pull into the Hunters Valley Winery (www.huntersvalleywines) and spend a few hours relaxing with owners Darlene and Bill Kvaternik on their spectacularly situated vineyard overlooking the river.
Lewisburg/Selinsgrove area: If you haven’t been to this area of the state, you’re missing out! Explore the beautiful natural and cultural attractions starting with the Susquehanna River Valley Visitors’ Bureau (www.visitcentralpa.org) then head to the Samek Gallery (www.bucknell.edu) on the incredible Bucknell Campus. Just up the road you can view the huge professional murals depicting local history on buildings in Milton, PA (www.miltonpatime.org).
As you can see, there are so many possibilities for you to take in art during an “art-full” roadtrip. Let us know how your adventures went and share images with partners by emailing: manager@paartisantrailscom.
Until the next trip….have a great New Year!!

In a September blog, you were introduced to George Nowack, artisan trail coordinator from PA Route 6. Each of the Artisan Trails has a trail leader that works part-time to coordinate events, recruit and retain trail partners, and act as the trail coordinator as part of the activities of the statewide alliance of PA Artisan Trails. These people are enmeshed in the culture of their regions, often working full time for a related cultural/tourism group or agency.
This month, the focus is on PA Artisan Trail leader Kristin Poerschke!
Kristin has worked for the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor in Ligonier, Pennsylvania for the last nine years as the organization’s bookkeeper/Office Manager. She grew up in Chicago, graduated from Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, PA and then married and lived in West Virginia for 19 years before relocating to Ligonier 11 years ago.
The Lincoln Highway (PA Route 30) is a unique cultural heritage trail along the Route 30 roadway. There are lots of historically significant events and details surrounding this important roadway and it is also one of the routes that the PA Artisan Trail follows through the southwestern part of Pennsylvania. Kristin has been involved with the artisan trail program, known as Handmade Along the Highway, along PA 30W and PA Route 40 (the National Road) for the past six years, but has only acted as the coordinator of the artisan trails for the past 2 or so years. Although she claims that she has no formal arts background, she is very keen on supporting American artisans and appreciates the time and talent that goes into creating artwork. Kristin has encouraged individual creativity in many of her previous work experiences including her work as a teacher, an activities director at a nursing home, and a Girl Scout day camp director. One of her favorite arts-related memories is a Girl Scout Summer Day camp program where Kristin arranged to have a potter come and work with the girls. The artisan simply brought pounds and pounds of clay and encouraged the girls to create. They spent a couple of mornings that week getting messy and having a ball!
Kristin is well respected and appreciated by the PA Artisan Trails Alliance and her artisan trail partners for her supportive approach to the arts and her genuine, caring nature. If you’re in the Ligonier area, make sure to stop in to say hello! and explore at the new LHHC location at 3435 Route 30 East, Latrobe, PA 15650 – they’re still on the Lincoln Highway!

Kathy Trexel Reed, Berlin PA, Scherenschnitte artisan and member of the Handmade Along the Highway , Routes 30W/40.
Scherenschnitte, which means “scissor cuts” in German, is the art of paper cutting design. The art work often has symmetry within the design, and common forms include silhouettes, valentines, and love letters. The art tradition was founded in Switzerland and Germany in the 16th century, and was brought to Colonial America in the 18th century by immigrants who settled primarily in Pennsylvania.
Kathy has been practicing papercutting for quite a while and has been involved in the Guild of American Papercutters since 1996. She was president of the Guild from 2007-2008 and also was a major contributor and organizer to get the Guild of Papercutters National Museum in Somerset, Pennsylvania! You can read more about the museum at the links below. This unique artform requires lots of patience and the intricate designs are quite beautiful. A few of Kathy’s examples are below and you can find more in shops along Handmade Along the Highway as well as the museum at the Kathy Trexel Reed Gallery!

The PA Artisan Trails leadership and partners are immensely grateful for the support that each trail receives from individuals, businesses and local, regional and state organizations. On the state level, the PA Artisan Trails Alliance (PAATA), which is the coordinated group efforts of all trails’ leaders, is often selected to provide information as well as art awards for corporate and state organizations. This year, the PA Artisan Trails Alliance (PAATA) leaders were thrilled to have several requests for high-profile art awards, and representatives from the PA Artisan Trails Alliance were also invited to present a luncheon seminar for participants of the annual Main Street Conference in Scranton, PA!
The PA Association of Convention and Visitors’ Bureaus (PACVB) requested the PAATA provide marketing materials and art awards for their spring and fall conferences. At the spring conference, PAATA rack cards were distributed to participants and Linda Billet, partner on Rt15 ByWay of the Arts, was selected to prepare an art award for the PACVB recipient.

At the PACVB fall conference in September, PAATA again distributed materials including rack cards and a flyer on the art award program. PACVB also selected a plein-air original by PA Rt6 Artisan Trail partner Jack Paluh for their art award which was presented to an outgoing board member from Erie, PA.

The PA Downtown Center invited PA Artisan Trails to present information on how the PA Artisan Trails can coordinate with Main Street Programs during a lunch break-out session at their annual conference in Scranton, PA in September. Trail leaders were challenged by the weather (just a hurricane!) and record-breaking rains, but George Nowack and Terri Dennison (both of PA Route 6) facilitated a terrific informational discussion with interested conference attendees. In addition, the PA Downtown Center elected to select artwork from PA Rt 6 Artisan Trail partner Dave Mosbacher for their Volunteer of the Year Townie Award!

This year, as part of a grant-funded intiative through the PA Department of Economic Development (DCED), the PA Artisan Trails coordinated the posting of three billboards across Pennsylvania! Each board location was individually selected to maximize exposure to in-coming travelers along significant routes in the state. The colorful ad designs, using images of PA Artisan Trail partners’ works, were produced by O’Advertising of Newport, PA. The results were artistic and eye-catching billboards that were up during the summer months this year! Check out the images below. Funding remains for one additional billboard in the eastern portion of the state that will be completed in spring of 2012.

FALL FOLIAGE TOUR – GREATER SCRANTON
SCRANTON, LAKE SCRANTON, & MONTAGE MOUNTAIN
Once you check into your host hotel in the greater Scranton Area, come to the Visitors Center on Montage Mountain (Exit 182, Interstate 81). This driving guide will take in the scenic splendor that autumn brings with it to Northeast PA. While with us, add in a visit to Steamtown National Historic Site, the Electric City Trolley Station & Museum as part of your visit. Steamtown’s train excursions and the trolley museum’s one hour trolley ride also offer chances to experience our foliage. Hotel package information can be found on our website at www.visitnepa.org under the “Special Deals & Packages” tab.
1. LEAVING THE VISITORS CENTER - Make a right out of the parking lot and a left at the bottom of the hill onto Montage Mountain Road. Proceed to the traffic light just after the Lackawanna County Stadium, and make a right hand turn onto Glenmaura National Boulevard. At the next stop sign make a left onto state Route 502.
2. ROUTE 502 - This area runs behind Montage Mountain and will take you through the small town of Dupont and bring you up to the Maple Lake area of Lackawanna County. The mostly two lane highway curves through the mountain pass offering roads framed by the rich foliage display that can be found along this back route into the Pocono Mountains. The road runs along the scenic Nesbitt Reservoir. Proceed to the light at the junction of Route 690 and make a left turn.
3. ROUTE 690 - Make the left onto Route 690 which you will follow for approximately 5 miles as a temporary detour. This detour will take you through more farmland (look for the miniature horse and goats being corralled along this route) and will take you to Route 307. (You can make a left onto Maple Lake Road and see the lake. Following Maple Lake Road will bring you to the junction of Route 307, however, backtracking to Route 690 will offer more scenic views.) Turn left at the light where Route 690 intersects with Route 307..
4. ROUTE 307 - Making the left onto Route 307 ( The Scranton/Pocono Highway), you will be driving through some of the most beautiful foliage in Northeast PA. The trees lining this road include different species and offer one of the most majestic views of fall foliage in the area. On your left you will pass the Williams Bridge Reservoir. Just beyond the reservoir you will see parking lots on your left hand side. If you are looking to immerse yourself in the full beauty of the area’s foliage, it is recommended you park in the parking lot and follow the paved walking path for a tour of Lake Scranton.
5. LAKE SCRANTON – This three and a half mile lake sits just off Route 307 and is within minutes of the heart of downtown Scranton. The lake is owned and maintained by the Pennsylvania American Water Company. Popular with walkers and runners, the paved path surrounding this lake offers visitors a beautiful walk amongst the natural splendor of the property. The paved path allows for accessibility by walkers of all ages and skill level; unfortunately, pets and bicycles ARE NOT PERMITTED on the paths. There are benches located at several spots, as well as a handicapped accessible lakefront area.
6. ROUTE 307 INTO SCRANTON - Leaving the parking lot at Lake Scranton, proceed LEFT back onto Route 307 North . You will pass through the residential area of East Mountain. Two thirds of the way down the mountain on your right is a Scenic Overlook and Parking Area where you can see the entire Lackawanna Valley. The mountains to the north and east of Scranton are on display and offer some great foliage vistas of the region.
Leaving the overlook, turn right and proceed to the stoplight at Meadow Avenue. Turn Left onto Meadow and make the left at the top of the hill and follow the signs to get onto Interstate 81 South.
7. MONTAGE MOUNTAIN, INTERATE 81 South, EXIT 182 A – Follow Interstate 81 for two miles and proceed to Montage Mountain Road, Exit 182 A. Taking the exit, bear to the right and make the right at the top of the hill onto Montage Mountain Road. Proceed past the Visitors Center on your left and continue along the road through the light and make your way up the mountain Road to the parking lot level of Snö Cove/Snow Mountain Ski Area.
Parking at the top of the Mountain, you can take in a view of the area from the highest elevation near Scranton. Snö Mountain offers a zip line for those seeking some light adventure as part of their foliage tour. You can contact Snö Mountain by calling 1-800-GOT-SNOW for details on the activities offered throughout the year.
For more information contact the Lackawanna County Visitors Bureau at (570) 496-1701 or visit us on the internet at www.visitnepa.org

Each of the Artisan Trails has a trail “leader” that works part-time to coordinate events, recruit and retain trail partners, and act as the trail coordinator as part of the activities of the statewide alliance of PA Artisan Trails. These people are enmeshed in the culture of their regions, often working full time for a related cultural/tourism group or agency.
Due to severe budget restrictions and lack of funding, much of the work that these trail leaders do is on their own time and the dedication to the arts and culture of their region is notable. There is a lot of planning and hard work that goes on behind the scenes on the part of these leaders, artisans, and other community members to make the artisan trails and related arts events happen! PA Artisan Trails thanks each of the trail leaders for all that they do! As part of the upcoming blog posts, PA Artisan Trails will be featuring the Artisan Trail leaders from each of the six trails. We hope that this will provide our readers and followers, as well as artisans, a glimpse into what goes on “behind the scenes” at the PA Artisan Trails.
The first feature leader: The PA Route 6 Artisan Trail Coordinator, George Nowack.

George is not only a dynamo for the artisan trail on PA Route 6, but he is also an avid carousel artisan and he works with Meadville Medical Center as the Artistic Director. PA Route 6 is currently the longest PA Artisan Trail and there are partners across the route from Lake Erie and the northwest corner of the state over to the Scranton area and the Poconos! George works tirelessly to coordinate events, such as the traveling exhibit, and meet with artisans in order to promote current and upcoming artisans across the expanse of Route 6. George was recently featured in a blog by Jude Ongley (http://strawmountainblog.blogspot.com/) as well as an article that talks about his carousel carvings and promotion of PA Route 6 artisans and events. Be sure to check it out at: Views & Voices – GNowack 2011
