Galleries @ GoggleWorks, home to PA Glass Trail, participate in major African American Art Show

Outsider Folk Art and A.C.O.R. Galleries Collaborate to “Light Up” Reading with Art during February and March 2010.

The Outsider Folk Art and African American Coalition of Reading (A.C.O.R) galleries announced they will collaborate on one of the city’s and state of Pennsylvania’s largest African-American art shows in downtown Reading in honor of Black History Month and as a special tribute to black artists.

Titled “Believe, Achieve, Succeed,” the show comprises contemporary mixed media works of more than 100 local, regional and national artists to be displayed from February 1 through March 26, 2010 in a 4300-square-foot space on the first floor of the Exide Building at 645 Penn Street (courtyard side), site of the former Albright College Cultural Center where numerous other art exhibits have been held.

A public grand opening will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010 beginning at 5 p.m. and including a ribbon-cutting by Reading Mayor Thomas H. McMahon. Many of the artists will be in attendance. The show is being sponsored by the Berks Arts Council and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.

The Outsider Folk Art (www.outsiderfolkart.com)and A.C.O.R.  ( www.acor-pa.org/ ) galleries are prominent Reading and Berks art institutions both based in The Goggle Works Center for the Arts, 2nd and Washington Streets, Reading.

Get it while it's Hot!

Enjoy the energy, the crowd — and the fire!

(Nov. 16, 2009 – Reading, Pa.) November temperatures maybe steadily declining, but the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts is thumbing its nose at the cold by hosting the toastiest event imaginable: “Get It While It’s Hot!” On Sat., November 21, 2009, from 5-9 p.m., watch EXTREME glassblowing by famed glass artists from across the country along with the opportunity to bid on the HOT art as it is being created.

goggleworks

Watch as glassblowers torch, spin, cut and sculpt glass into one-of-a-kind works of art. Place bids on more than just the finished products, but also on the process and labor that will bring each piece to life. Internationally-known glass artists will work with hot molten glass in teams. Hot glass can be a fairly unpredictable material to work with, unlike other media such as metal, clay or stone. It changes form and consistency very quickly, so glass artists are constantly moving, shaping and developing the piece while working with the changing properties of the glass. Team leaders will designate how the pieces will evolve.

This year’s event includes an hour for cocktails before the event providing guests with an opportunity to chat with participating artists. “Get It While It’s Hot!” is the culmination of the Month of Glass, which has included the PA Glass Trail and the PA Glass Trail Exhibition. Cost is $50 for members and $65 for non-members. Tickets to “Get It While It’s Hot!” are now buy one get one free. Proceeds will benefit the GoggleWorks Hot Shop. For tickets, call the GoggleWorks at 610-374-4600.

The GoggleWorks Center for the Arts is a community art and cultural resource center for Berks County and central and southeastern Pennsylvania, and is the largest, most comprehensive interactive arts center of its kind in the country. The mission of the GoggleWorks is “to nurture the arts, foster creativity, promote education and enrich the community.” Hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Free parking is available in the GoggleWorks parking lot, accessible from 2nd, 3rd or Walnut Streets.
